- Historical information: Limba (Glottocode: limb1257; iso: lma) is a dialect cluster of northern Sierra Leone, with a few communities in Guinea. This collection contains materials from the Wara Wara dialect, specifically as spoken in and around the towns of Yagala and Kabala.
As of August 2022, Limba is spoken by 500,000 to 1 million speakers, with a large number in Limba diaspora within and outside of Sierra Leone. Despite its large speaker number, it is endangered as Sierra Leonean Krio is spoken by everyone in the village, and is frequent in everyday speech. Few outsiders learn Limba, and many Limba live in environments dominated by another ethnic group.
The materials in this collection were collected by Nicholas Rolle (PhD Berkeley 2018) while he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) in Berlin, Germany. The collection contains transcriptions in the Limba orthography, the most important being <ɛ> for [ɛ], <ɔ> [ɔ], <th> [t̪] (dental t), <t>~<ts> [t] (alveolar t), and <ŋ> for [ŋ]. The main focus of fieldwork in 2022 was to document vocabulary and tone, and to collect stories. In 2023, it was for noun classes, tense/aspect/mood, syntax in general, and names and uses for plants and trees.
Audio was recorded on a Marantz recorder in WAV format, usually with a lapel microphone. Video was recorded via a Zoom video recorder. Additionally, sometimes iPhone was used to record. For notes, a Livescribe pen and notes were used. Financial support came from ZAS-internal funds. - Scope and content: Audio and video recordings of the Wara Wara dialect of Limba (recorded in 2022 and 2023). File bundles correspond to distinct recording sessions, being either texts or elicitation. Complete field notes are included in bundles 2022-06.003, 2022-06.004, 2022-06.028, and 2022-06.029. A lexicon of about 1000 elicited lexical items is in 2022-06.002, later updated in 2022-06.030. Photographs are in 2022-06.027.
