- Historical information: Haruo Aoki, specialist in Japanese and Nez Perce, received a B.A. from Hiroshima University in 1953, a M.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1958 and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1965, where he was on the faculty of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures from approximately 1967 until 1991. Professor Aoki began research on the Nez Perce language in 1960 that continued throughout his career, publishing Nez Perce Oral Narratives in (University of California Press, 1989) and Nez Perce Dictionary (University of California Press, 1994).
- Scope and content: The Papers document Aoki's fieldwork on the Nez Perce language in 1960-1962 and include survey sheets and microfilm copies of field notebooks. Aoki's early fieldwork focuses on vocabulary and simple sentences, not on texts. Aoki's Nez Perce consultants included Harry Wheeler and Ida James Wheeler. The Papers also include an index to Abraham Halpern's notebooks on Pomo languages.
