- Historical information: Guébie is an Eastern Kru language spoken by 7000 people in the prefecture of Gagnoa in south central Côte d'Ivoire. There are seven Guébie-speaking villages, all located between the cities of Gagnoa and Lakota, the largest of which is Gnagbodougnoa. Guébie speakers tend to also speak French from birth. French is the lingua franca of the area, and the language used in education and government. Along with Guébie speakers, there is a large population of Lobi (Gur) and Dioula (Mande) speakers in Guébie villages, especially Gnagbodougnoa. Because the Lobi and Mande people do not speak Guébie, their presence (which began during the national crisis in 2010) has increased the importance of French in the region.
The Kru language family has two major branches: Eastern and Western. Guébie falls in the Eastern branch, and is geographically situated between Bété and Dida, two other Eastern Kru languages. Guébie is not mutually intelligible with Bété, and though it is closely related to Dida, there are key phonological and syntactic differences between the two, as well as distinct oral traditions. - Scope and content: This collection consists of Guébie materials collected by Hannah Sande from October 2013 through October 2021 in the United States, Canada, and Côte d'Ivoire. Materials include sound recordings (e.g., of grammatical and lexical elicitation sessions and narratives with translations and transcriptions), field notes, and other relevant documentation. The content of elicitation sessions is described in the Description field.
