    • Historical information: William H. Jacobsen is Professor Emeritus in the Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received a bachelor's degree from Harvard University (1953) and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (1964). His doctoral dissertation was a description of the Washo language. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle from 1961-1964, then moved to the University of Nevada in 1965. He served as President of the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas in 1992. Jacobsen conducted fieldwork on Washo in the summer and autumn of 1955 and the summers of 1956-1959.
    • Scope and content: The Papers document Jacobsen's research on Washo, a Hokan language spoken in the Lake Tahoe region of eastern California and western Nevada, and the Wakashan language family of the Pacific Northwest. This includes microfilm copies of his original Washo notebooks from field trips in 1955-1959, as well as unpublished and pre-publication drafts of conference presentations and journal articles related to both Washo and Wakashan. Jacobsen's main Washo linguistics consultants were Roy James, Bertha Holbrook, and John Wiger; other Washo consultants included Hank Pete, Frank Morgan, Clara Frank, Mike Holbrook, Lizzie Evans, Wally John, Doonie and Eenie Cornbread, and Roy and Jeremiah Cornbread.
