    • Historical information: This collection primarily consists of materials produced by students of the graduate-level field methods course in the Department of Linguistics at UC Berkeley between August 1986 and July 1987. The course was taught by Prof. Leanne Hinton, and the language consultant was Rafael Pascual. All other listed researchers were students in the course.
In the following academic year, in fall 1987, an undergraduate field methods course (Linguistics 140) on K'iche' was taught by Hinton (see Hinton.010), as was "American Indian Languages" (Linguistics 175). Two items in this collection come from the work of one student in the latter class (2016-01.073 & 2016-01.074). In spring 1988, Hinton taught a combined undergraduate-graduate seminar on Mayan languages (Linguistics 198/298). Her compiled notes from that course are similarly included in this collection (2016-01.076).
    • Scope and content: Sound recordings (2016-01.001 through 2016-01.047), original class notes, student papers, transcriptions, concordances, correspondence, and lexical file slips. Also includes fewer materials from Linguistics 175 (fall 1987) and Linguistics 198/298 (spring 1988); see Historical information. Sound recordings are primarily of elicitation sessions conducted during biweekly class meetings.
Most paper materials in this collection (2016-01.048 through 2016-01.076) originally constituted Hinton.009.001 through Hinton.009.003. They were reorganized, fully catalogued, and added to this collection in November 2020. The lexical file slips (2016-01.077) were donated in 2018.
