Historical information:These materials were collected by Virginia Dawson in Assam, India, beginning in 2015 during her graduate studies at UC Berkeley. Tiwa is spoken in Assam and Meghalaya, India. The 2001 census lists the number of speakers as 27,100 (out of 131,000 ethnic Tiwas). Most Tiwa speakers live in the Karbi hills; Tiwas that live in the plains generally speak Assamese. These materials were collected in Umswai, Karbi Anglong district, Assam.
Scope and content:Recordings of elicitation sessions, texts (including traditional narratives and personal histories), scans of printed language material and field notes. File bundles are organized by year and data type (field notes, recordings of elicitation sessions, primary texts).

File bundle consists of (in chronological order): 1) A short description of her family by Bibiana Maslai (file name includes "family") 2) An history and recollection of Father Balawan's involvement in promoting the Tiwa language, told by Juliana Maslai (file name includes "FatherBalawan") 3) "Raikhos Poroire Parine Sane Sadra", a traditional story told by Horsing Kholar (file name includes title of story) 4) "Umswaine Sa", a description of her family's new tea growing business told by Bibiana Maslai (file name includes "UmswaineSa") 5) A life history told by Glorina Maslai about how she married a Garo but retained her Tiwa identity (file name includes "lifestory") 6) A family history told by Juliana Maslai about how (and why) her parents became Catholic (file name includes "familyhistory") All texts were transcribed by Virginia Dawson and checked and translated by Clerina Kholar. Date of each recording included in file name.
