He received bachelor's (1960) and doctorate (1970) degrees in linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley. His doctoral dissertation was a grammar of the Hupa language based on archival sources and original field research conducted from 1962-1964. He subsequently published widely on a variety of topics in Athabaskan linguistics and edited several volumes of Edward Sapir's collected works, including a collection of Hupa texts and related materials collected by Sapir in 1927.

Ned Jackson and Louisa Jackson were his primary Hupa consultants; Golla also worked with Minnie Reeves and Rudolph Socktish. The Papers include digital images of file slips summarizing data from Golla's field notebooks and archival data collected by Edward Sapir.
